From Foundation to Focus

Strategic College Counseling for Sophomore and Junior Years

Grades 10 and 11 are where momentum becomes measurable. Sophomore year is about laying the groundwork—building academic strength, identifying interests, and setting thoughtful goals. Junior year is when it all begins to crystallize. With college admissions on the horizon, students need strategic direction to deepen their involvement, elevate performance, and clarify their path. Momentum’s Grade 10–11 Comprehensive Program is designed to support both phases of the journey: helping students establish a strong foundation and then take decisive action. Through expert advising, academic planning, and personalized strategy, we help students move with purpose—so when application season begins, they’re not catching up… they’re leading.

Strategic Planning & Preparation

Personalized College Roadmap
We build a customized plan based on the student’s academic history, personal interests, and college ambitions. This roadmap outlines major milestones for the year and keeps students focused on what truly matters for a successful application season ahead.
Junior year is prime time for standardized testing. We help students decide between the SAT and ACT, build a realistic testing timeline, and provide insight into whether test-optional strategies make sense for their profile and goals.
Using student interests, academic fit, and long-term goals, we help develop a thoughtful college list that includes a balanced mix of reach, match, and safety schools. We also introduce strategies for researching schools and demonstrating interest effectively.
We begin preparing students for the application process by identifying potential essay topics, outlining their personal narrative, and organizing achievements and experiences. Our goal is to ensure students feel confident and ready to hit the ground running in senior year.
Junior year teachers often write the letters students submit. We help students build strong relationships with potential recommenders and provide guidance on how and when to request letters—plus what information to offer for a standout letter.
Some selective colleges conduct interviews as part of the admissions process. We help students build the confidence and communication skills they’ll need by offering mock interviews and personalized feedback.
We introduce tools and strategies to help students organize important deadlines, summer programs, testing dates, and early application timelines. By building habits now, students stay ahead of the curve going into senior year.

Academic & Extracurricular Development

Annual Goal Setting
We help students define clear, measurable goals for their junior year—academically, personally, and within their extracurriculars. These goals serve as checkpoints that keep students accountable and motivated throughout the year.
Colleges expect students to challenge themselves. We guide students in selecting courses that demonstrate academic rigor while aligning with future majors or fields of interest, helping strengthen their academic narrative.
Junior year is an ideal time to solidify ideas about future careers or majors. We help students explore options through assessments, hands-on experiences, and guided reflection to ensure their college list and activities align with their evolving goals.
Students will work directly with a Profile Development specialist to establish an elite extracurricular project area. Whether by launching a small community project, joining a new club, or exploring creative hobbies, our students will be guided through projects that will build confidence and begin shaping a personal narrative.
We recommend selective enrichment programs, research opportunities, or academic competitions that help students gain recognition and depth in their area of interest. These enhance a student’s academic credibility and help them stand out.
The summer before senior year is critical. We help students apply to top-tier summer programs, internships, research experiences, or volunteer opportunities that reinforce their college goals and personal growth.
We support students in attending virtual or in-person college visits, information sessions, and tours. These experiences not only help refine the college list but also provide material for thoughtful essays and demonstrated interest.
We analyze PSAT, SAT, ACT, or practice test results and help students understand where they stand. Then, we offer tailored recommendations for next steps—whether that’s test prep, retesting, or preparing to apply test-optional.
